What lighting can you recommend for my recently renovated Victorian property?
Period Ideas March 2007
Wall Lighting for a Victorian property. Three words: Style, Proportions and Finish. A Victorian style generally most suited, would probably be a single or double arm “gas-style” wall light. Single arms would be best suited to a narrow recess or alcove; a double arm would better suit most “runs” of walls. This Victorian style would have (Dummy) Gas Valves, be plain in detail and be fitted with a glass shade. Made from Brass, the finish would be to “taste” but, importantly, with the look of nearby Door & Window Furniture, Electrical Switches etc and Curtail Poles born in mind. It is important that they all should compliment each other. Antique finishes are currently very much in fashion. The finish therefore, does not have to be the “sparkly-new look” of the more common highly polished & lacquered fittings. We at Broughtons are able to apply that Antique look in every detail to as well all the aforementioned items. It is important to consider the quantity required – the inclusion of a matching Ceiling Pendant obviously dictates the wall light requirement. Whether a bright lighting is required for reading is also worth considering. One way to vary the light output is to install a Dimmer Switch. This can be finished to match. Floor lamps may also be worth considering at the rear of seating to increase the spread of light whilst reading – again in a matching finish. Roger Broughton
As I have a major on-going refurb, do you have sales staff available who can, importantly, offer help & guideance if I make the trip to you?
We have a Team totalling 15 or so including expert sales staff who are available to give all the help and advice you may need. You are served in "the old fashioned way". In addition, samples can be purchased to take home making the final decision easier.
What is Malleable Iron?
Malleable Iron is an iron which, after casting, is subjected to a heat treatment process known as annealing. In this process castings are heated to around 1000C for up to 100 hours whilst in contact with haematite ore. The ore acts as an oxidising agent which removes carbon from the casting. It is the presence of carbon in cast iron which causes its brittleness and removing some makes the casting stronger or more malleable
