A plain design 1 Gang (single switch) Dome Switch in our Antique Satin Brass finish. It is sold with the oak pattress unfinished, enabling you to stain, wax or colour as you wish.
The high quality dolly switch mechanism is made in the UK and is rated at 20A. It is available as 2 Way, Intermediate or Retractive. A 2 way switch is suitable for operating lights that only require switching from up to 2 places, the intermediate switch would be required if the light is to be operated from more than 2 places (for example in hallways and on landings). A retractive switch is used for momentary contact to operate items such as electric blinds and roof lights etc.
The mounting base (shown here in black) is available in black or white.
Antique satin brass is a living finish that is produced by hand. It is unlacquered so it will oxidise as it is exposed to the air and it will mellow and develop a rich patina with age and use. It can be polished back to achieve a lighter brighter finish or left to age further. This natural ageing combined with the hand crafted nature of the finish means that there may be differences in colour and detail. This all adds to the beauty, character and individuality of each product. Do bear this in mind if you are buying items over a period of time. If you are a retail customer in the UK then when we send you your Goods you will also receive a delivery/returns note (as well as your receipt). Full instructions on how to return the Goods to us are on the delivery/returns note. You have 14 days from date of receipt to return Goods to us and do not have to give a reason for doing so. You will have to pay for the return of the Goods. If the entire order is being returned, your refund will include the cost of the original delivery. You can either organize the return yourself (getting proof of postage) or (mainland UK only) we can arrange a collection via our courier. Courier collections arranged by us are charged at £15 per parcel if less than 1.5m in length, or £37 for parcels over 1.5m in length (eg curtain poles).
If you are NOT a retail customer or you are outside of the UK then you will not be able to return goods to us unless they are faulty.
If you receive damaged or faulty Goods then you should contact us to arrange the return within 48 hours of your receipt of the Goods. If we confirm when the Goods arrive back with us that they are damaged or faulty, then you will not be liable for the cost of returning the Goods. You will be offered a replacement or refund.
We regret that we cannot accept returns for Special Order items (unless damaged or faulty). A Special Order item would typically be any item that is not in stock.
We cannot be held responsible for packages lost, delayed or damaged in transit. For your protection if you are returning Goods to us, we recommend that you send your package by Royal Mail Special Delivery.

Dolly switches

I have now bought sixteen of these dolly switches over the last few years with another six still to be purchased. They are certainly in keeping with the style of older houses. The construction has changed over the years with plastic replacing the china originally used in the manufacture. The price has also risen considerably. Like Bridget B. I too found “ … the pre-drilled screw holes on the wooden pattress were too far out from the centre, which meant that when the round Dolly switch cover was fitted, you could still see part of the screws at either side…” . This also applies to the square pattress. This is irritating in an otherwise well produced product and would not be difficult for Broughtons to remedy.

Replacement antique switches

I replaced most of the old brass fronted dolly switches in my house a year or so ago on the basis they were not the safest in terms of design. I decided to do the more tricky ones recently. There has been a marked price hike, but I suppose that applies to most things.
One switch arrived with a broken mechanism, but a replacement was sent without any problem.
The switches look really good. They are well made and solid. They are pretty easy to fit. Broughtons are a decent company to deal with.

I bought the "Round Dolly Light Switch 1 Gang Antique Coppered Black Base" but requested a round wooden pattress instead of the advertised square one. I was pleased with the overall product but when it came to fitting it, I discovered that the pre-drilled screw holes on the wooden pattress were too far out from the centre, which meant that when the round Dolly switch cover was fitted, you could still see part of the screws at either side - these should not have been visible so I was a bit disappointed with the lack of attention to detail for such an expensive item.

We had a lot of antique switches of similar style in the house. They have been easy to replace with these quality and attractive reproduction dolly switches. Obviously the modern interior makes them safe and compliant. They arrived very quickly and the company seem very efficient.

We have replaced all of our light switches with these, nearly all being antique brass, but with a satin chrome finish for one room. They look absolutely fantastic, very high quality great for adding character to a period property. Everyone comments of them, would highly recommend.

I was very pleased with this switch. The quality of its construction was extremely high and fitting was very easy. I intend to buy more switches soon so I can match up and give my home a period feel inside to match its construction.
