Popular Finishes
When you are choosing items to complete or complement your home, the finish of the chosen item is equally important to its form (some might argue more important!). Our products come in many finishes from polished brass, chrome and nickel, to satin, antiqued and aged - we have it all. The following is an explanation of some of the popular finishes we offer that apply across most of our departments:
| Polished Brass Unlacquered Most of our stocked polished brass is unlacquered (which
means there is no lacquer to break-down). From new, it has a
bright-mirrored finish and after a short time it mellows and over
further time it oxidizes and ends up having a soft brown patina. If you
wish to preserve the polished finish, you will need to polish with a
metal polish. Alternatively, if left unpolished the item will slowly
develop an aged appearance. Clean with a soft damp cloth followed by an
application of a quality wax polish. |
| Polished Brass Lacquered Lacquered Polished Brass should retain the polished
appearance for a period and should not be polished with abrasive
polishes/cleaners as this will break down the lacquer. Like paint and varnish, with use and over time the
lacquer will break down causing the items to look “scruffy” and require
attention. Clean with a soft damp cloth followed by an application of a
quality wax polish. |
| “Stainless” Brass Stainless Brass is a high-tech finish that looks like
Polished Brass, but isn't! It has a guaranteed life of 25 years and
will not oxidise or tarnish and is resistant to acid rain and pollution. This is a low maintenance finish and can be cleaned by
wiping with a soft cloth. If you like a bright shiny look but without
the polishing, this is the finish for you! |
| Hand Aged Brass (Unlacquered) Hand
Aged Brass is antiqued by hand as a bespoke service produced by one of
our in-house specialist Crafstman. Being Hand Aged, no two pieces are
ever identical. Any items that we offer on our website in Polished
Brass Unlacquered can be Hand Aged and finished as "Medium" Hand Aged by
default. We can also make the finish darker or lighter, for example to
match other products you have. Please contact us to discuss. Clean
with a soft damp cloth followed by an application of a quality wax
polish. |
| Antique Satin Brass (Unlacquered) Antique
Satin Brass is a stocked range designed to look old. Recesses are very
dark and main surfaces have a quite dull/satin finish. Being
unlacquered, the finish forms an even more characterful look over time
and can be polished (if desired) to create a warm loved finish. Clean
with a soft damp cloth followed by an application of a quality wax
polish. |
| Dark Antique Relief (Unlacquered) Everything from our Antique Satin Brass collection can be refinished for you by
our specialist craftsman to give this handsome finish. This is a darker
finish with some areas polished back in some areas to look "worn". Other
Unlacquered Polished Brass items can also be aged similar to Dark
Antique Relief finish so you can carry this look throughout your home.

where natural wear would take place with recesses a medium bronze
finish. Many more items are available to order as well as a lacquered
version to order. Clean with a soft damp cloth followed by an
application of a quality wax polish. |
| Polished Nickel Polished Nickel
appears similar to Polished Chrome in that they both have silver tones,
but Nickel displays a warmer tone with an antique look to many items.

| Pewter Pewter is an ageless
metal. It has a warm and lustrous quality, which is hand-finished to
give a unique patina. Not plated or lacquered, Pewter has no coating to
degrade. Only the best-quality lead-free Pewter is used (min 92% tin),
and is entirely safe to use anywhere in the home. It does not rust, is
hard-wearing and easy to keep clean with a soft damp cloth. |
| Polished Chrome English versions
of Chrome items are Hand Polished Brass that is then given a primer
plating of copper, followed by Nickel plating and then finished with a
protective hard coating of Chromium. Items would benefit from the
occasional wipe with a cloth impregnated with a light oil or wax polish.
Imported Polished Chrome has the same appearance but not necessarily
the same three-stage plating process. Clean with a soft damp cloth
followed by an application of a quality wax polish. |
| Satin Chrome Satin Chrome is
normally achieved by abrading the brass to form a satin finish prior to
Chrome plating. This finish is less likely to show finger prints etc.

| Rustic Bronze Rustic Bronze is cast in Solid Bronze and has a fine textured surface for a characterful rustic look. Being the same metal that bronze statues are
made from, the life of this metal is exceptional. Clean with a soft damp cloth followed by an application of a quality wax polish. |
| Real Bronze Metal Antique Real Bronze Metal Antique (RMBA) is cast from Solid Bronze and firstly goes through a polishing process and is then placed in an oven to a high temperature which gives it a lovely traditional quality antique look. |
| Polished Bronze Polished
Bronze is highly polished Solid Bronze and it has a coppery-brass colour. When it mellows it is a lovely warm cosy colour. Clean with a soft damp cloth followed by an application of a quality wax polish. |
| Mellow Polished Bronzed Mellow Polished Bronze is a hard-wearing applied finish which resembles the "real thing" (solid bronze) but is applied to some cast/malleable iron
items. Clean with a soft damp cloth followed by an application of a quality wax polish. |
| Antique Black Ironwork Antique Black Ironwork is a huge collection that is made from malleable cast iron and has a textured surface to replicate hand-beaten metal and has a hard wearing Black Epoxy Powder coating. (Other finishes are available on the
base metal) Clean with a soft damp cloth followed by an application of a lightly oiled cloth. |
| Smooth Black Ironwork Smooth Black Ironwork is a limited range and is made in the same way as Antique Black Ironwork and goes through the same process as the Antique Black Ironwork but has a smooth surface which is sometimes preferred by
Conservation Officers. Clean with a soft damp cloth followed by an
application of a lightly oiled cloth. |
