Thumb Latches have a decorative handle on the outside of the door with a thumb shaped lever that when pressed will lift an arm on the other side of the door to unlatch it. The latch arm often also has a small knob to help operate it from the inside, and some also come with locking pins operable from the inside for privacy. Thumb latches originated in Suffolk hundreds of years ago and became popular throughout the UK.
